About the Business

Ruthven Music is a brand new Music Tuition Studio in the heart of Coatbridge. Set in a fully accessible, ground floor, end terrace unit in the Dundyvan Industrial Estate I provide one on one Instrumental lessons to all ages and abilities, from beginners to advanced students looking to pursue a career in the expressive arts.

I also have experience working with students who have a range of educational and physical additional support needs. I am a professional and well qualified Instrumental Tutor, and I have taught Piano, Keyboard, Violin, Viola, Singing and Music Theory for over 12 years.

As part of the course much of my time was spent on Primary and Secondary school placements, therefore I have a full understanding of the Scottish school system, including all the requirements for the new SQA National, Higher and Advanced Higher Awards and can provide tutoring for both the practical and listening aspects of these exams.

Piano & Keyboard

Piano and Electronic Keyboard lessons are available to children from 5 years old through to adults. Piano is a classical musical instrument, made up of 88 keys. There are 3 main types of piano, the Grand Piano, the Upright Acoustic Piano and the Digital Piano.
Due to using both hands and having two lines of music to follow, the Piano is a great starter instrument, allowing pupils to learn further instruments far quicker.

Most of the music I teach on Piano is classical in nature, although many of my students enjoy playing versions of pop and musical theatre songs, which I can arrange to the correct level for each individual. It is a very versatile instrument to compose for, and many of my more advanced students also work on accompaniment and keyboard harmony. Most students who want to sit exams whilst learning Piano use the ABRSM classical grades as a framework.

Keyboard is an electronic pop instrument. These come in many different sizes, although you really need at least 66 keys to start with. Playing keyboard involves learning about chords, and being able to play in time with a backing rhythm. Most of the repertoire for keyboard is pop based, although many students also enjoy jazz and musical theatre arrangements.

Any students wanting to sit Electronic Keyboard exams will use the Trinity exam board. My teaching studio provides students with a Kemble Studio upright acoustic piano, Yamaha Clavinova digital piano and a Yamaha full size Electronic Keyboard to have lessons on, however all students must have their own keyboard or piano to practice on at home.
