About the Business

Music has always been a part of my life. I’ve been playing piano since I was five years old, and clarinet and saxophone since my school days.

I worked my way through the ABRSM graded examinations on piano and took my Advanced Certificate before I left school. I went on to read Music and English at the University of Southampton, and followed this up with a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) specialising in music — a nationally recognised teaching qualification.

I pride myself on a patient, relaxed but enthusiastic approach to teaching: learning an instrument or about how music works should be fun, not a slog. And my methods are tried, tested and true: many of my pupils have gone on to study music at university, achieve success in examinations and build the confidence to perform, while others have discovered music-making to be a fun, relaxing and sociable hobby to enjoy.

My Services

I offer private instrumental tuition for piano, clarinet and saxophone pupils, from beginner to advanced level, classical or modern styles.

Instrumental Lessons:

I offer piano, clarinet and saxophone lessons from beginner to advanced level. Private tuition takes place in the comfort of your own home or at my house in Lordswood, Southampton. Parents accompanying pupils are welcome and encouraged to observe sessions; this helps enormously with providing support between lessons, and you might even learn something alongside your child!

Music Theory Lessons:

Music theory is the study of the “rules” of music — rules that are frequently deliberately broken by many composers and performers, but rules nonetheless! A solid understanding of music theory helps to make you a better musician by developing your understanding of musical concepts and terminology. It’s particularly helpful if you’re interested in composing or arrangement, but it’s also useful for those of you with an interest in improvisation for more modern styles of music such as jazz, rock ‘n’ roll and pop.

Aural Training:

Being a good musician isn’t just about having the skills to press the right keys at the right time; it’s also about being a good listener, and that’s why aural tests have always been an integral part of most practical music examinations.

I can help you develop your confidence in all aspects of aurals, ranging from pitch and rhythm recognition to the identification of cadences and other musical features such as texture, dynamics, articulation, tempo, tonality and time signatures.

Aural training isn’t just useful for graded examinations; it’s also helpful for those studying GCSE and A-Level music, both of which demand analytical skills. It’s also a great means of developing confidence and improving general musicianship.
